Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

What is EPS?

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is an NHS service that allows GP practices to send prescriptions electronically to a pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor of your choice.

Once a prescription is issued, it is sent securely through EPS and can be downloaded by pharmacies and dispensing appliance contractors that are enabled to use the service.

You can choose (or nominate) a pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor to receive your prescriptions automatically. This means you do not need to collect a paper prescription from the GP practice.

If you would like to use EPS, please speak to your GP practice, pharmacy, or dispensing appliance contractor.

Benefits of using EPS:

  • If you usually collect repeat prescriptions, you will no longer need to visit the GP practice to collect a paper prescription. Your GP can send your prescription electronically to a pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor of your choice.

  • This saves time for you, your GP practice, and pharmacists, and makes the process more convenient. Many pharmacies are open during evenings and at weekends.

  • Prescriptions are sent electronically, so there is no paper prescription to lose.

  • You have more choice about where you collect your medicines, including pharmacies near where you live, work, or shop.

  • If a prescription needs to be cancelled or changed, your GP can do this electronically and issue a new prescription without you needing to return to the practice.

  • You may spend less time waiting at the pharmacy, as repeat prescriptions can be prepared in advance of your visit.
